Living the Life of Double Portion part 1 Duluth Church 8/23/2015 2 Kings 2:9-10 (NKJV) 9 And so it was, when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?” Elisha said, “Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.” 10 So he said, “You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so.” In this world of slim fast, quick weight loss, diet, and do without world ... You want to talk to me about a double portion ! There is a quest ... The search for a life with a double portion. How do I find it? How do I get there? How do I receive the double portion? And once I get it ... How do it out in my day to day life? And if I live a life of double portion in God what will I leave behind when I die? The life of Elisha gives us very clear answers! ( text) Elijah knew that the double portion was not his to give. That's why he said " it's a hard thing." In effect he was saying , " Elisha, if you has asked for anything that I was able to give , it's yours. I look around in this church age where people are running around throughout the country, even throughout parts of the world, looking for men who will give them Only what God can give! 1. What is a double portion? It's important to understand the double portion, and why Elisah was asking for it. In a Jewish family when the father died or was taken away, his children received an equal portion of his goods, except the first born, who received a double portion! He didn't inherit the entire estate but he received twice as much as everyone else. Once we come to Christ we are no longer outsiders begging God for a few crumbs off His table. We are sons and daughters of the living God. In Romans 8:17 we read that not only are we heirs but joint heirs, co heirs, and equal partners in the inheritance of the Firstborn, the only begotten Son of God ... Is mine! Jesus Christ was raised from the dead, and is seated in glory at the right hand of God - I am in line for the double portion because of Him ! Elisha demonstrates that it is possible to desire great things from God and to achieve them. Great thing about the account ... Upfront he deals with the negative and what evaporates the double portion 2. They show up but don't get in the game. Can you imagine ... A young man in high school ... A sophomore on the team ... Playing behind an all American ... The coach looks over and says get into the game ... Young player says ... Yah well ... I'll just watch ! 2 Kings 2:15New King James Version (NKJV) 15 Now when the sons of the prophets who were from Jericho saw him, they said, “The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha.” And they came to meet him, and bowed to the ground before him. In this passage the prophets bowed before Elisah and acknowledged that he was a man of God, and that he spoke a powerful / true word of God. They realized that the a Spirit of The Lord rested on this man, but despite this they would not believe what they were hearing.... Vs. 16. Prove it to me! These prophets represent the type of person who claims to have faith but it is mixed with unbelief and human reasoning. This is the downfall of so many in the church today .. It's a mixture of faith and reasoning ... They say , " God is able sort of , " It's one thing to to acknowledge the anointing and presence of God .... But another to possess the double portion. Once Elisha had received the double portion he began to understand how deeply God feels when men bow before What they perceive is hid presence and do not obey him. Jesus Christ was a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. He was grieved at men who only gave him lip service and did not obey him. I don't know if u have experienced this but as pastor I have also known the sorrow in my heart of seeing people who claim to worship before God and yet will not obey him. I have been a Holy Spirit-filled Christian for 45 years, yet since I have committed to walking in the prophetic spirit filled life. I have seen and experienced more of the impact of God in my life than ever before. Far too many give only “lip service” to it. It is not seen as being “all that important” in the life of many churches, and therefore the people never get to experience, flow in, or release in their own lives this powerful realm of the Holy Spirit that can take us into “double portion territory” with God. And if we do not get the opportunities to develop in the prophetic ministry, then we are missing a huge part of God’s purposes for our lives. If we do not embrace more of the prophetic, we will continue to slip into obscurity in a modernistic, Christ-rejecting generation (especially in the Western world). There are so many advantages for a Christian when we will pursue the prophetic ministry with all our heart. God speaks, directs, anoints, provides, enables us to do things we have never been able to do before, and even allows us to supersede those we have admired and longed to have what we have seen in their lives and ministries. The question is, “Who do we look to today to inspire us in such a way? Whose spirit would we earnestly desire to have a double portion of?” It is very easy for a Christian to glibly say, “I want to be more like Jesus,” for, if we do, then our lives should go on to display the power and impact of His ministry like never before. As far as I can understand from the Bible, it all comes down to the strength of our desire for the things of God. Do we desire the supernatural of God strongly enough to sacrifice everything else for it? How ironic it is that some religions are willing to physically die for a lost cause, when so many Christians are not even prepared to live for theirs! When Jesus is real enough – and alive enough – within our lives, then we will do whatever is necessary to walk in that “double anointing” of the Holy Spirit, to keep our eyes steadfastly fixed on Jesus and what He is saying to us today, that we will demonstrate our love for Him by our obedience to Him in whatever He says! That is what a prophetic person is about. It is not about living in the history of the past, or in speculating about the future, but in hearing and knowing “What the Spirit is saying to the churches today” and to us as individual followers of the Lord Jesus Christ (Revelation 2 & 3).
